What to Know About Powers of Attorney
A power of attorney is a legal document that gives someone (your “agent” or “attorney-in-fact”) the authority to act on your behalf in specific matters. For example, you can designate a power of attorney to a spouse or family member, allowing them to make decisions about your finances or healthcare should you become incapacitated.

- You (the principal) must sign and date the power of attorney document when you have the mental capacity to do so
- The document must be notarized
